Vitamin C vs Back Pain

Vitamin C vs Back Pain

Source: Prevention Magazine (below)

"I suffered for nine months with severe back pains. I had x-rays, which indicated deteriorated back disks. My doctor said disks can be fused, but he would not recommend such an operation. I would have to learn to live with the pain. He did prescribe some pain pills which made me feel better, but drowsy. After one week, I advised my doctor that I was not going to take any pills. I would rather live with miserable pain than become a dope addict.

"I could not walk one city block without severe back pain. I could not drive a car more than 50 miles. I had to use a cane for support.

"Friends handed me a number of issues of Prevention. I found a “Mailbag” letter from a woman who suffered back pain and took 3,000 to 4,000 milligrams of vitamin C a day. It solved her back problem. I did the same, and within three days my back pain was gone."

From Sherri Attila:

Thank you Judy Hanson for passing on this testimony.

Why would vitamin C help back pain? Because it is one of the essential ingredients in rebuilding collagen. When re-building our cells---Collagen acts like mortar does when you build a brick wall. Would a wall be very strong without the mortar? No way. You would just have one brick pushing on top of another with no support.

Vitamin C is water soluble and not stored in the body. You must get it everyday.

Therapeutic levels of supplementation are essential for helping back problems. You should start with the Shaklee Basics Protein and the Basic strips to cover the essential nutrient requirements.

Why use NutriFeron?

Why Use NutriFeron?
Dr. Bruce Miller did such a wonderful job explaining how Nutriferon™ works in your system so I thought I would post his comments here to give you a basic understanding of how it works. Once you really understand it, you will not want to be without it..... It is that important!
Lowell and Linda Dietz

Dr Miller:

I understand the position of our “friends at Shaklee.” We cannot make a claim that a particular product will protect you from—or cure any disease, be it “yearly flu virus”, bird flu virus or any other virus.

However, I feel it is appropriate to explain what happens (the mechanism) on a cellular level when a virus invades your body.

The immune system’s actions are obviously much more complicated than my explanation. This is the “made simple outline version”---just hitting the main points.

A virus (any virus) cannot duplicate outside of a cell. When a cell is invaded, the virus takes over its duplication machinery and begins to replicate itself. Thus when a virus invades the body it heads for a cell.

When a virus enters a cell the cell releases a chemical messenger called interferon.

1) Interferon does two things.
a) It tells other cells how to defend against this virus.
b) It stimulates cells called macrophages to multiply and get active.

2) Meanwhile the virus is multiplying in the invaded cell.
a) When the cell gets loaded with new viral particles---it explodes releasing more particles into the body to invade other cells.

3) The newly released viral particles are in for two surprises.
a) The exploding infected cell is surrounded by macrophages which "eat" up viral particles.
b) Other cells in the area are more resistant to viral invasion.

4) Most of the time a viral infection can be stopped at this stage.

What if a cell is low in interferon when the invasion occurs?

The interferon output is low, weak and there is a time lag.

1) There is a delay and a weak signal telling the other cells how to defend against the virus.
2) The macrophages receive a late and feeble signal.
a) During the time lag the virus is replicating rapidly in the infected cell.
3) The infected cell bursts releasing millions of new viral particles.
4) Macrophages are few and weak and many particles escape.
5) The other cells fall to invasion because they do not know how to defend against this virus.
6) This is a chain reaction.
7) You become ill.

NutriFeron increases the production of your own natural interferon.

1) If a cell has a “full tank” of interferon, it seems to me that it would be better able to battle a viral invasion.

Dr. Bruce B. Miller, DDS, CNS

In my view, that is one of the best explanations of why you would want to consider using Nutriferon™ so that your body will always be prepared for whatever may come along. Could you imagine sending our army to battle without guns or ones that where not working very well? They may be lucky and win a few battles but for sure, they would lose the war.

Impressive Results Have Been Reported!
There have been many testimonies sent in from people who have been having great results with Nutriferon™, but the one below maybe the most shocking I have read so far!

T-Cell Count Up With Shaklee
I am kind of a mentor to a young man I met through an associate and came to find out that this young man of 20 years at the time had AIDS.
I suggested that in addition to his regular treatment, he try some Shaklee products, mainly Vita Lea, Basics with Soy and Immune Building Complex at the time.

When he started the program his T-Cell count was very low and viral load very high, I cannot remember the specifics, but I think his T-Cell was around 200 and the viral load was in the high thousands.

Well, he went back to his Doctor for his regular blood work-up less than 30 days later after starting Shaklee and to his doctor’s surprise and his..... HIS T-CELL Count jumped way up to around 498+ and the virus was no longer detected in his BLOOD!

He was so excited when he called me on my cell phone and said his doctor was stunned and kept count on his fingers the number of days since he last saw him! His doctor also turned pale and said he NEVER saw anything like this before! One of the nurses smiled at him and told him "keep doing whatever it is you are doing because it's working..."

Richard Cooper

NutriFeron naturally activates the production of your body’s own interferon. With its patented combination of four plant extracts, it invigorates your natural immune system and increases your resistance safely and naturally.

Does this mean you will never get sick if you use Nutriferon™?No, but it does mean your body will have what it needs to fight back when it is invaded, which happens to us everyday. All Shaklee nutritional products are created to make up what is now missing from our diets. How many of us really eat the required daily amount and quality of food to keep us healthy?

Shaklee vs. Warts

Warts gone. Shaklee to the rescue!

Hi Shaklee Family,

Many in my group are asking for these photos (talk about 1,000 words) and story so I thought I'd share with all.

Before Shaklee After 6 weeks using Shaklee
[If your e-mail program cannot view the above photos, I have included them as an attachment.]
And here is their story:
This 2 1/2 yr old has had warts for two years and then the warts started spreading to his face. Warts were growing on top of warts. They had tried everything including freezing and over the counter products.

They started using Shaklee products in 2005 but were using the products hit and miss and weren't consistent. They also tried using Shaklee with other products from the health food store. This went on for a year until I approached the family with a challenge: Use Shaklee products ONLY for one month and if you don't see any results your money will be refunded in full. They agreed to this and that I could use their story and pictures.
Because of finances, I kept the products to a minimum.

These are the products:

Citriboost 1/2 scoop

Energizing Soy Protein 2x/day

Optiflora Probiotic 1

NutriFeron 2/day

straight Basic H applied to warts at night

After 6 weeks, ALL the warts (about 30 of them) were COMPLETELY gone. This couple now has a group that is growing fast because of these results, and they received their first bonus check last month!

Lets Talk Fosamax

Stan,Do you have any publication on the Fosamax studies?I read something about the bone density false-readings because Fosamax research also measured the "dead bone" in the density readings. I also heard that after the one or two-year studies, that the bone-density readings actually decreased because the "dead bone" mass was out of the system. Thanks for your help!JoAn K.

Most doctors that are prescribing Fosamax have no idea how it works.

Your bones are a living, breathing, constantly regenerating organ made up of individual living, breathing cells. They are not just structures of inanimate calcium and other minerals.

As with other organs in your body, there is a mechanism for removing the old, damaged, or worn-out bone cells. Then there is the balancing mechanism for stimulating the growth and generation of new healthy bone cells.

When these two Creator-designed mechanisms are in balance, normal healthy bone density is maintained. In women especially, the reproductive hormones play a key role in the balance of these two mechanisms.

If the hormones get too far out of balance during menopause and after, the generation of new healthy bone cells slows down and bone density/mass decreases (as does muscle mass, brain mass, etc.).

Fosamax "works" by blocking the Creator-designed mechanism that removes the old, damaged, and worn-out bone cells. Theoretically, this will result in an increase in bone density. However, this bone density results from the continued accumulation of old, damaged, worn-out, or dead bone cells -- NOT from the increase in HEALTHY new bone cells.

The little secret that many don't know, though, is that if you take Fosamax for a whole year the best that they expect to see is a bone density increase of 2-3%.

That is a 2-3% increase in the density measured by their instruments -- but it is NOT an increase in the health of your bones. It is a decrease in the health of your bones, since that is not the result of the generation of healthy bone cells. Because of this accumulation of defective material and the interruption of the normal, healthy Creator-design processes, Fosamax has all manner of potentially destructive side-effects.

I will send a series of e-mails of articles that give insight into some of these side-effects.

Dr. Shaklee said that the key to health is to get into harmony with the Creator's design -- not work against it, as Fosamax does.

The key to bone density for women is NOT to take more calcium. You do have to take enough calcium (in balance with magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin K, copper, etc.) to feed the process of generating healthy new bone cells. But just megadosing calcium won't necessarily effectively build bone density.

The key to bone density for women is to deal with the hormone imbalance. I have seen excellent results with women following my hormone balancing plan, which will be detailed in the next e-mail that contains a cofirming testimony.

Several e-mails follow.

Shaklee Recipe for Bone Density Loss

Stan -

I've been taking Fosamax (as a last resort) for over a year now after two bone density tests reporting osteopenia, the second test worse than the first. For many years now I've taken at least 3000 mg of calcium (in the form of Shaklee's Cal Mag, Vita Lea, and Protein). I take double handfuls of supplements daily. I am also faithfully committed to daily exercise, with plenty of weight bearing. As a post-menopausal woman (61), what else can I do to rebuild bone, prevent further loss and not have to take Fosamax??

It's not how much calcium you are taking. It is the uptake of calcium into the bones, which requires getting your hormones in balance.

You absolutely do not need Fosamax -- which theoretically works by interupting your Creator-given process of bone density regulation, while inflicting long-term damage far worse than the very minimal bone density benefit it is suppose to provide.

The dirty little secret that they don't tell you is that these so-called osteoporosis drugs at very best will only increase bone density 2-3% per year. And they do it in a manner that goes totallly against nature and actually blocks your body's normal bone density maintenance process.

I have a woman in her late sixties who was being pressured to go on Fosamax last year. Her bone density was dropping dramatically, mainly because she was also on Coumadin.

The "doctor" repeatedly denied to her that their was any connection between the Coumadin and her rapid bone density loss. I sent her medical research documentation that Coumadin blocks the action of vitamin K, which is essential to bone density, and that bone density loss is a known side-effect of Coumadin.

Instead of going on the Fosamax, she started on my bone density plan. In about 6 months, she went to her gynocologist for an annual physical. They did a bone density test as a routine part of the exam. While she was sitting in the exam room, the nurse said to her, "You're still taking your Fosamax, aren't you Mrs. Bridges?" She said no, she had never started it and was doing a nutritional program instead. In just a few minutes, the doctor came in with a strange look on his face holding the results of the bone density test. He said her bone density had come up one whole point on their scale, whatever that scale is. He said he NEVER sees that in his practice. He brought the other doctors from the clinic in and they all looked over the report. They were all amazed.

6 months earlier, her bone density had been in free-fall. After 6 months, on my bone density program, not only had the free-fall stopped, but her bone density had increase one full point on their scale.

She was thrilled.

She was on the Coumadin because of an irregular heartbeat. The bone density program plus Omega and CoQHeart also dramatically improved her heartbeat problem.

Instead of Fosamax, take daily:

4 Menopause Balance Complex
2 Vita-E Complex
4-6 OsteoMatrix
2 servings Soy Protein

[Break this up into 2 servings -- i.e., 3 GLA, 2 Menopause, 1 Vita-E, 2-3 OsteoMatrix, 1 protein twice per day.]

Fosamax May Damage Liver

Fosamax May Damage Liver

Doctors from Israel describe a 71-year-old woman who developed liver damage 2 months after starting Fosamax, the popular bone-resorption inhibitor, used in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and they feel strongly that the drug was the cause or a major contributing factor. Some of the known side effects of Fosamax are gastric and esophageal inflammation, but renal failure, ocular damage, skin reactions, and hypocalcemia have also been reported. The case of hepatitis that developed after treatment with alendronate was recently reported in a 77-year-old woman. The authors admit that the mechanism by which alendronate may cause liver damage is not known, although one possibility is that the fosamax inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver, which may alter liver function.Regardless of the meachnism, physicians treating patients with a fasamax or related drug should be altert to the possibility of liver dysfunction and monitor properly for it.

Genuine Bone Density

Bone Density Testimony

Hi Stan and Joann,

I wanted to report another victory for Shaklee products! I went for my yearly visit to the GYN Doctor back at the first of the year, and I had a good report.

The part that really got my attention was my bone density test. The Doctor said, "I want to show you something." He pointed out on the paper where the average level is and then said, "This is where you are at." I was 20% above average! He said, "You have bones of steel!" I told him that I was taking the vitamins, and he said, "Whatever you are doing, keep it up!" I was so thankful! I just read this week that the vitamins will help with bone density, and my result from the test proves it!

Also I have a cousin who started on the Vita-Cal and the Alfalfa for his Arthritis. He was taking 15 of each/day as you suggested. I talked with him not long ago, and he was doing good and back to working from where he had been retired. He had been in a lot of pain before he started the products. He said he has been able to cut back on the dosage that he was taking because of doing so well! Thanks Shaklee!

Fosamax: How it Works

Fosamax -- how it works
It is very rare where a drug-based solution to a chronic degenerative health condition is the answer. As this study shows, it is fraught with potential side effects.Hardly any doctors who prescribe Fosamax even understand how it works, which is by killing the osteoclast cells in your bone. These cells are important for the dynamic balance of remodeling your bone. The osteoclasts actually remove bone, but they work in conjunction with the osteoblasts to increase bone density. So short-sighted traditional medicine takes the violent war approach and decides to poison and kill these cells so only the osteoblasts are left and supposedly the bone strength increases. While it would be nice if this were true, it just doesn't seem to work that way. Most physicians don't have any clue that these biphosphanate drugs are toxic poisons that contain the same type of chemicals that are used to remove soap scum from your bathtub.Fortunately, you don't have to expose yourself to these poisonous drugs--there are non-drug solutions like healthy calcium in raw dairy, vitamin D from cod liver oil and vitamin K.Dr. Joseph Mercola, D.O.

Fosamax: Lawsuit/Side Effects

Fosamax lawsuit/side effects:

Fosamax is Merck's $3 billion per year osteoporosis drug that's drawing fresh controversy with a court battle over an unusual side effect. According to the Associated Press (AP), a lawsuit filed in Florida claims that Merck has been negligent by attempting to downplay one of the drug's side effects. A New England Journal of Medicine report linked Fosamax (and other drugs in a class of pharmaceuticals known as bisphosphonates) with ocular inflammation. When untreated, this condition causes blurred vision, swelling and even blindness. The Florida lawsuit highlights another unusual bisphosphonate side effect: osteonecrosis of the jaw; also known as "jaw necrosis" or "jaw death," prompted by a loss of blood supply to the jawbone. The suit has been filed on behalf of 250 Fosamax users who developed this condition. The AP article notes that Merck representatives responded to the suit by stating that no cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw were reported among more than 17,000 subjects in clinical trials. Nevertheless, in January 2005 the FDA directed Merck to update the Fosamax label with a warning about the side effect. The company complied later in the year, but the lawsuit claims that the warning is not sufficient. According to the Fosamax web site, other side effects include inflammation and ulceration of the esophagus, painful swallowing, stomach pain, indigestion and nausea. Fosamax and severe gastrointestinal side effects

The Food and Drug Administration has approved two drugs to treat osteoporosis that are not hormones -- alendronate (Fosamax(R)) and calcitonin (Calcimar(R), Miacalcin(R)). Both these drugs slow the rate of bone resorption and can be quite costly. Fosamax(R) has been shown to build bone and prevent fractures in women who have developed post menopausal osteoporosis. The disadvantage of Fosamax(R) is that some women cannot tolerate the gastrointestinal side effects, and this drug must be taken on an empty stomach with water only and no other food, liquids, or pills can be taken with it for at least 30 minutes. This is because the risk of burning the lining of your esophagus is so great. Recently, the manufacturer issued warnings about this potential problem and now recommend that you also remain standing for the 30 minutes. Obviously, if you cannot stand, you must remain sitting. You must also take calcium while on this drug so that the bone that is being built has some minerals to work with.

Fosamax Type Osteoporosis Drugs Noted to Cause Serious Eye Problems

Drugs commonly prescribed to osteoporosis and cancer patients may cause serious inflammation in several regions of the eye in some patients. Researchers hope the finding will make physicians more likely to monitor patients for such eye problems as well as prompt drug companies to add warning labels to their products. Two medications in a class of drugs called bisphosphonates, which are often used to increase bone density in patients with osteoporosis, were found to cause the serious side effects in the eyes of some patients. The drugs are also prescribed to cancer patients, as lung, breast or prostate cancer that has spread to the bones can also decrease bone density. Researchers reviewed thousands of cases in which patients were prescribed bisphosphonates and tracked 314 patients who also reported eye problems. Although the side effects were rare and did not occur in most patients, some types of eye inflammation can lead to vision loss or blindness if left untreated. Of the patients who reported side effects, close to 100 suffered from blurred vision. Other problems included pain and swelling. Researchers noted that the side effects went away when patients stopped taking the medication. New England Journal Medicine, March 20, 2003;348(12):1187-8

Fosamax: A few unanswered questions: Some of the side effects of the medication, though described as "mild", give rise to concern over the long term impact of this medication. According to the article reviewed, "the safety of treatment...for longer than four years has not been studied". Without a technical description of the medication's actual mode of action, one can speculate that it acts in a manner that reverses the process of bone demineralization by attracting serum calcium to tissue prone to mineralization. This is suggested by some of the side effects such as: "commonly...abdominal and musculoskeletal pain", and "digestive disturbances" which could arise from a low calcium reaction of the smooth and red muscles. . . and by the caution offered in using the medication for people with: low serum calcium, Acute upper gastrointestinal problems, Pregnancy, Severe Kidney Disease, who have either increased demands or decreased supply of calcium, due lower absorption from the bowel or increased excretion through the kidneys. The medication, though effective at reversing bone loss, still does not address the primary cause of bone loss, which is an imbalance between the supply and demand of calcium in the body. Caution should therefore be exercised that persons on this medication to also take a sufficient amount of a quality calcium supplement in order to avoid running the risk of developping other problems related to systemic calcium deficiency.

Alfalfa vs. Nosebleeds

Alfalfa vs. Nosebleeds
My 11 year old son has had severe nosebleeds since he was a toddler. He would have several a day, and it took 15 minutes or more for one to stop, even though I made sure I was doing everything right. Nosebleeds were so common, he didn't even tell me anymore at 3 yrs old -- he just knew what to do. Once, we were food shopping and his nose started bleeding as soon as we entered a store. Each patron who entered asked if we needed help, but I assured them "everything is fine -- this happens all the time." By the time his nose stopped bleeding, we stood in a huge puddle of blood, so the next person who offered help was asked to let someone know there is a biohazard clean up over here! Now, seven kids later, I know the key! My youngest son is 22 months old and began waking every night with nosebleeds -- here we go again! I asked our naturopath about them, and he looked in Caedmon's nose and told me he is allergic to something. Hmmm. I know what to do for that -- Alfalfa and Garlic. I began giving him 3 Alfalfa tablets, which he eats like candy, in the morning and at night. His nosebleeds stopped within 2 days! If I see him rubbing his face, I crush a garlic and give it to him in applesauce -- instant cure! Shortly after this discovery, my 3 1/2 year old daughter began having nosebleeds, too. I began crushing alfalfa and putting it in some juice for her -- two days, no more nosebleeds!

Why are we amazed when our bodies do what they are supposed to do as long as they have the right stuff to do it with?

Taking Multiple Vita Lea

I am an absolute advocate of taking lots of Vita-Lea -- WITH iron.

My 13 year old take at least 6 per day. All of my older children take at least that or more.

One thing you have to be absolutely clear about is that you cannot overdose on Shaklee because all Shaklee supplements are foods or in the same form as you would find in nature in foods. Your body recognizes them and knows exactly what to do with them -- as opposed to manufactured/lab produced vitamins that the body does not recognize as food.

I took just 3-4 a day from the time we started in Shaklee in 1978 until 1989, and it was certainly wonderfully beneficial. But in 1989, I went through an extremely stressful and difficult time in life (primarily consequent to ministry projects we have been involved in). I really "came to the end of myself" and was deeply depressed for about 3 months. About that time I heard Master Coordinator Dede Shaw say on a tape that she had found taking 10 Vita-Lea per day (all we had in those days was WITH iron) to be life-transforming (George & Dede Shaw are the top bonus earners and have the largest organization in all of Shaklee). I also heard Master Coordinator Jim Burke talking about the importance of drinking the soy protein 3 or 4 times per day.

I put what they were saying to the test and started drinking the soy protein at least 3-4 times a day (I had generally been drinking it 2 times a day for years) and increased my Vita-Lea to 10 per day.

It was life transforming -- in terms of increased stamina, sustained energy and vitality, mental clarity, emotional stability and consistency, creativity -- and in a word, productivity!

I wear a lot of hats -- I homeschool my children, operate several ministry projects including a Christian television station that we built (one of the extremely stress-inducing projects mentioned above), and run a very active Shaklee business that does 10,000-12,000 PV each month -- plus giving a lot of time on the phone and by e-mail consulting/answering questions for downline members and others about health questions. I couldn't possibly do it all without my 3-4 proteins and 10 Vita-Lea WITH iron per day. I know, because on days when I don't get it for one reason or another I miss it/feel it. It simply enables me to be more productive, to do more, accomplish more, have a greater impact.

I have a protein (my proteins are really equivalent to 1 1/2 servings) in the morning with 5 Vita-Lea, a protein about mid-afternoon with 5 Vita-Lea, and a protein right before going to bed. If I've had a particularly stressful, exhausting day and it is the wee hours of the morning by the time I'm going to bed, I'll have 5 more Vita-Lea with that last protein (making it 15 Vita-Lea that day).

I am also a strong advocate of WITH iron. Iron is one of the things that most all people are deficient in in their diet. All the big survey studies that I've ever seen that looked at the average nutritional intake for a large body of people have always shown that people are getting insufficient iron from their diet. And iron is absolutely essential. Iron is what carries the oxygen in your blood. Without adequate iron, you won't have sufficient oxygen going to the cells of your body. Oxygen is absolutely necessary for burning the glucose which produces the energy in every cell -- so without adequate oxygen your energy level will be low.

I can tell a difference in energy level when I'm taking Vita-Lea with iron versus without iron. So can JoAnn, and it causes her no small consternation if I open a bottle of Vita-Lea without iron.

There are 2 forms of iron -- the vegetable form and the metallic. Most supplement companies out there actually use the metallic form of iron -- some actually use iron filings as their source of iron in their concoction. But Shaklee uses the vegetable form of iron like that found in spinach, lettuce, and other green leafy and colorful vegetables. Your body recognizes it and, if you get more than you need, knows exactly what to do with it. You don't hear those who are warning of overdosing on iron also telling people to be sure not to overdose on spinach, broccoli, potatoes with skins, or beets, or other vegetables high in iron.

Poisoning from iron supplements is one of the most common causes of poisoning in the United States -- but there has never been a case of iron poisoning from Shaklee supplements in all of Shaklee's 50 year history.

The "conventional" advise is that men over about 45 don't need the iron and that it may aggravate a prostate problem. But all of that advice -- as well as all the other warning about iron -- is based on research with the metallic form of iron.

I'll be 54 in a couple of weeks and I've never received anything but benefit from taking 10 Vita-Lea with iron per day -- as have all my children, who all take at least 6-10 Vita-Lea per day.

All the Shaklee supplements are wonderful, and I've taken all of them at one time or another -- but I don't take all of them all the time. My recommendations is: drink lots of Shaklee protein (soy protein, Physique, or Slim Plan -- alternate for variety), take lots of Vita-Lea in order to have an abundant supply of all the foundational nutrients, take lots of Sustained Release Vita-C (again I take 10; my 13 year old takes at least 8), get some essential fatty acids (Lecithin and/or OmegaGuard), and take plenty of Alfalfa and Herb-Lax for cleansing/detoxification. If you'll do that, you've got a good solid health program. Women should also take some GLA and some Menopause Balance Complex (not just for menopause) to keep their hormones in balance and prevent PMS.

Other things you take as needed or if you have an existing condition that you are trying to heal or bring back into balance.

I do take some other things regularly or at least frequently. I usually take some extra Vita-E and often some extra B-Complex. I always take Formula I to prevent allergies and allergic reactions, which I'm prone to. I go through a bottle of Optiflora occasionally and a bottle of DTX about once a year. etc. I take some Mental Acuity often and give it to my children to sharpen their minds for their school work. But I look at these things as additions to my foundational program above.

Hyperthyroidism vs. Shaklee soy protein

Thank you for the information and your response regarding misinformation being circulated about soy, particularly thyroid and soy.

And I have to let you know that I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism about 5 years ago, at which time I started taking the Shaklee supplements I needed as well as the Shaklee soy protein. Consequently, I have never been on medication, and this past summer -- for the first time -- my test results on my thyroid came back as normal.

Recently, I have been experiencing fluctuations in my body temperature so I increased my Shaklee soy protein to twice a day and that eliminated that problem.

Omega-3 fatty acids inhibit growth of liver cancer cells

Reviewed by: Dr. Rashmi Yadav Apr 3, 2006

"Beta-catenin is known to promote cell growth and also is implicated in tumor cell promotion. Therefore, our finding that omega-3 fatty acids can decrease levels of beta-catenin is further evidence that these compounds have the ability to interact on several points of pathways involved in tumor progression,"

By University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

Two new studies by a University of Pittsburgh research team suggest that omega-3 fatty acids--substances that are found in high concentrations in fish oils and certain seeds and nuts--significantly inhibit the growth of liver cancer cells. The studies, presented today at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may be an effective therapy for both the treatment and prevention of human liver cancers.

The first study, Abstract number 2679, looked at the effect and mechanism of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells. Hepatocellular carcinoma accounts for 80 to 90 percent of all liver cancers and is usually fatal within three to six months of diagnosis.

"It has been known for some time that omega-3 fatty acids can inhibit certain cancer cells. So, we were interested in determining whether these substances could inhibit liver cancer cells. If so, we also wanted to know by what mechanism this inhibition occurs," said Tong Wu, M.D., Ph.D., a member of the division of transplantation pathology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, in whose laboratory the research was conducted.

The investigators treated the hepatocellular carcinoma cells with either the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid (AA), for 12 to 48 hours. DHA and EPA treatment resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of cell growth, whereas AA treatment exhibited no significant effect.

According to the investigators, the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on cancer cells likely is due to the induction of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Indeed, the investigators found that DHA treatment induced the splitting up, or cleavage, of an enzyme in the cell nucleus known as poly (ADP-Ribose) polymerase, or PARP, which is involved in repairing DNA damage, mediating apoptosis and regulating immune response. The cleavage of this enzyme is considered a tell-tale indicator of apoptosis. Furthermore, DHA and EPA treatment indirectly decreased the levels of another protein known as beta-catenin, an overabundance of which has been linked to the development of various tumors.

"Beta-catenin is known to promote cell growth and also is implicated in tumor cell promotion. Therefore, our finding that omega-3 fatty acids can decrease levels of beta-catenin is further evidence that these compounds have the ability to interact on several points of pathways involved in tumor progression," explained Dr. Wu.

In the second study, Abstract number 2680, the investigators treated cholangiocarcinoma tumor cells with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for 12 to 48 hours. Cholangiocarcinoma is a particularly aggressive form of liver cancer that arises in the ducts that carry bile from the liver and has an extremely high mortality rate. Again, the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA treatments resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of cancer cell growth, while the omega-6 fatty acid AA treatment had no significant effect. Likewise, DHA treatment induced a cleavage form of PARP in cholangiocarcinoma cells, and DHA and EPA treatment significantly decreased the level of beta-catenin protein in the cells.

According to Dr. Wu, these findings suggest that omega-3 fatty acids not only may be an effective therapy for the treatment of human liver cancers but may also be a means of protecting the liver from steatohepatitis, a chronic liver disease characterized by the buildup of fat in the liver and believed to be a precursor of hepatocellular carcinoma. The next step in the process, he said, is to test the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in mice harboring human liver tumors.

Vitamin K vs Osteoarthritis

New research indicates that a deficiency of one vitamin may increase the severity of osteoarthritisa.

Low levels of vitamin K may trigger abnormalities in bone and cartilage, says Boston University School of Medicine researcher Tuhina Neogi in an interview that appeared in Bostonia (the BU alumni quarterly). Neogi noted this as the impetus behind her examination of vitamin K and osteoarthritis.

Neogi and her team examined data collected from more than 670 subjects who participated in the Framingham Offspring Study. Blood samples revealed levels of phylloquinone (also known as vitamin K1), and x-rays were used to assess joint space narrowing and the presence of osteophytes, the bony growths that sometimes form in the joints of osteoarthritis patients.

The study produced two key results: 1) Low vitamin K1 levels were associated with a greater severity of osteoarthritis, and 2) Subjects with lower K1 levels had a greater number of osteophytes than subjects with high levels of the vitamin.

Based on the outcome of this study (published in the current issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism), the BU team has already received Arthritis Foundation funding for a clinical trial in which osteoarthritis patients will receive either a vitamin K supplement or a placebo.

Neogi told Bostonia: "We don't know how much vitamin K is necessary for these bone and cartilage proteins to function optimally. Our preliminary observational results suggest that we probably need more vitamin K than the recommended daily allowance."

The current recommended daily allowance for vitamin K is 65 micrograms for women over the age of 25, and 80 micrograms for men in the same age group. But in his Nutrition and Healing newsletter, Jonathan V. Wright, M.D., recommends 5 to 15 MILLIGRAMS per day.

Renal Cell Liver Cancer Testimony

This is my story. It started in May of 2000. First let me say that if it weren't for our faith and our belief in the Lord, we could never have gotten this far.

My husband developed a cancerous tumor in his kidney and had to have his left kidney removed.. He did well after that for about two years amd then the cancer returned. A cancerous tumor was found in the liver, and we were sent up to the Cleveland Clinic for a second opinion and they told us about two research projects that we could try. The first one had to do with shots of Interferon and Interleuken.

For three months my husband got worse every day so they stopped the shots. Then Esther told us about Shaklee Supplements, and we got my husband started on a strong supplement program to build his Immune System to help fight the Cancer . We also started juicing vegetables and eliminated all red meat except for chicken and fish, and eating only organic vegetables and fruits. He also drank only Reverse Osmosis filtered water (BestWater).

My husband was then started on another research program in January of 2003, but it seemed to have some bad side effects so he was taken off the research program. In the meantime, we still kept giving him the Shaklee Supplements . Then in June 2004, my husband had a G.I. Bleed, and they had to tie off six veins. They couldn't believe how well
he healed. We know that if it weren't for our faith in the Lord and the Shaklee Products he would not be here today.

It has now been two more years that my husband has done well, and Dr. Reeves, our oncologist, said to make sure he keeps taking the Shaklee supplements as most people with this type of Liver Cancer do not live more than six months and it has been over four years and he is still doing well.

Here are the Shaklee Supplements that he takes THREE TIMES A DAY:

Two Scoops Soy Protein(Each Meal) 5 Vitamin C 500 Mg (Three X a Day)
One Basics Strip( Each Meal) 10 Alfalfa "
4 Nutriferon (Three X a Day) 3 Liver DTX "
4 Carotomax " 1 Zinc "
4 Flavomax " 1 Garlic "
4 Lecithin " 1 Tblsp. Liqui Lea (Twice a Day)
Performance Drink (Throughout the Day)

Glucose Regulation Complex Works! Help with Weight, Sleep, and Cravings!

To those considering Shaklee's Glucose Regulation Complex:

I am not easily swayed by promises to bring results for feeling better. I have sought to live a healthy lifestyle with eating right and consistent exercise. In spite of my best efforts over the last 5 months, I lost no weight and felt little difference in my energy level.

When I called Ann to ask about something to help me rest at night, she asked about my blood sugar regulation. I have been concerned about that for a while, as I was a gestational diabetic with 2 of my pregnancies. She suggested I try the GRC as there were people claiming to sleep better, and she said, "The weight is falling off of them." I thought, "Sure,I've heard this before!" but was willing to give GRC a try as I felt I was at the end of my rope.

To my great amazement, the first night I slept better and on the second day, my I felt "steady" all day long and didn't experience lows and highs of energy throughout the day. I was eating less food, feeling more satisfied and was continuing my exercise program.

After one week, I had slept each night without sleeping aid. (This was new for me as I havehad chronic pain for 6 1/2 years from a series of car accidents.) I was feeling better, having less headaches and had lost one pound, and 1/2 inch each in my bust, waist and hips! Now, this was amazing to me after NO results for so long. (I am serious when I say I have been extremely diligent over the past 5 months. You can ask those around me for proofof my efforts!)

After 9 days on GRC, I was completing an hour walk and said to my friend, "I feel so differently, as though my pulse and blood pressure are lower than they have been." (Last year my heart rate shot up to 140 resting as a result of lack of sleep and chronic pain. Basically, my central nervous system got stressed and went out of sync. After exercising this past year, my pulse has rarely been below 130 for the first 5-10 minutes after exercise.) We got out my blood pressure cuff within the first minutes after walking and took my measurements. My BP was 124/85 and my pulse was 87! I was thrilled and I am encouraged since my pulse before ranged from 125-140 right after exercise. I am hopingthat I will eventually be able to get off of my medication for my heart rate!

Now 13 days from the first GRC, I have lost another inch on my waist (1 1/2 inches in 13 days!!!). I have carefully measured and am certain that I have been correct in my numbers.

Overall, I am beginning to feel rested and am awaking in the morning ready to get out of bed. I am losing weight and inches and feeling much better. My blood pressure and pulse are coming down, and I am experiencing a "steady" feeling throughout the day.

Give GRC a chance. Perhaps you will be feeling better too!!

Most Sincerely,

Antibiotics in infancy may double asthma risk

British Columbia Research

Babies treated with an antibiotic before their first birthdays are twice as likely as antibiotic-free infants to develop asthma, new Canadian research suggests.

And the risk of the chronic lung disease grows each time a baby is prescribed one of the drugs.
"This is the best evidence we have right now, and the best evidence that we have looks like there is potentially an association" between antibiotic exposure early in life and asthma, said lead author Dr. Carlo Marra, an assistant professor in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. "People should not be prescribing antibiotics unless they're really necessary."

The researchers, who pooled data from eight studies that included more than 12,000 children, found that children were up to 2.9 times more likely to develop asthma if they had been given an antibiotic before the age of one, compared with children who had not received an antibiotic.

In a second analysis, this one involving more than 27,000 children, the B.C. team found a 16% increase in risk for each additional course of antibiotics given to children.

"A lot of the infections in children -- things like otitis media (middle ear infections), bronchitis and upper respiratory tract infections -- are being over-treated," Dr. Marra said. "Those are the biggest indications for antibiotic utilization, and, particularly for bronchitis and upper respiratory tract infections, a lot of those are viral." Antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses.

The findings are published in this month's issue of the journal CHEST.

Asthma, which causes wheezing, coughing and chest tightness, is now the most common chronic disease of childhood. Between 10 and 20% of children in Canada have it, and about 20 children and 500 adults die each year from asthma, according to the Lung Association.

A study released in January found the percentage of boys in Canada aged eight to 11 who were diagnosed with asthma increased from 16% in 1994/95 to 20% in 1998/99. For girls of the same age, asthma jumped from 11% to about 15%.

Asthma rates have climbed dramatically in the last quarter century, and researchers have been trying to understand why. The disease's rise has been linked to everything from ground-level ozone to chlorinated pools.

But one theory blames exposure to antibiotics and the "hygiene hypothesis" -- the idea that kids who are not exposed to enough microbes and germs develop weakened immune systems.

Two types of white blood cells, T-helper 1 cells that fight bacteria and viruses, and T-helper 2 cells that respond to parasites, normally live in harmony. But children not exposed to enough viruses and bacteria may develop jittery immune systems, with an "underdeveloped Th1 system, and an over-developed Th2 system," Dr. Marra said. As a result, children overreact to pollen, dust mites and other normally harmless substances.

Other researchers have probed the asthma-antibiotic connection, but with conflicting results.

The Canadian researchers decided to combine the data to look at whether the use of antibiotics or dose matters.

Dr. Marra's team reviewed studies that compared exposure to at least one antibiotic to no exposure in the first year of life. Of the 12,082 children included, 1,817 cases of childhood asthma were reported.

Overall, infants given at least one antibiotic were 40% to roughly three times more likely to develop asthma as childhood progressed.

However, the association was highest in studies where parents of asthmatic children were asked, did your child ever receive an antibiotic in the first year of life? They may be more likely to report antibiotic use than other parents, because it's human nature for people with a disease to want to explain it.

It's also possible that babies who have early asthmatic symptoms are being misdiagnosed with a respiratory tract infection and put on antibiotics, because asthma is difficult to diagnose in children under one. In other words, the asthma came before the antibiotic.

Bigger and better-designed studies are needed, Dr. Marra said. The researchers are embarking on a study funded by the B.C. Lung Association that will involve about 200,000 children across the province to determine "if there really is an association between antibiotic association and asthma" and whether there are different risks with different types of antibiotics.

Ruptured Disc/Back Pain Testimony

6 years ago I ruptured a disc and had another bulging disc associated with that in my lower back. The doctor gave me Vicodin and Soma which I took for 4 days with little relief.

I began to think what I would recommend for a Shaklee customer. I stopped the drugs and began to take 3 Joint Health, 3 Chewable Calcium and 3 Chewable Vita-C 4 times a day.

My pain diminished, I was able to get up off the floor where I had been sleeping, and when I finally got to a neurologist I was almost pain free. She was talking about avoiding surgery as she looked at the scan -- amen to that!

She said I should cancel a trip to Israel 3 months out because of the condition of my back.

By following the Shaklee regimen above, I didn't have surgery, I went to Israel with no pain and no consequences -- and in November she dismissed me with, "Take your Shaklee and get out of here -- you are fine! My mother used to sell Shaklee."I am still fine at 73 years old. I have lost 4 inches in height during the last 30 years but no pain and I try to exercise daily. I do take lots of Shaklee supplements and I know that has kept me well. Hope this encourages someone.Alice

Drugs companies 'inventing diseases to boost their profits'

By Mark Henderson, Science Correspondent

World News, The Times of London, April 11, 2006

PHARMACEUTICAL companies are systematically creating diseases in order to sell more of their products, turning healthy people into patients and placing many at risk of harm, a special edition of a leading medical journal claims today.

The practice of “disease-mongering” by the drug industry is promoting non-existent illnesses or exaggerating minor ones for the sake of profits, according to a set of essays published by the open-access journal Public Library of Science Medicine.

The special issue, edited by David Henry, of Newcastle University in Australia, and Ray Moynihan, an Australian journalist, reports that conditions such as female sexual dysfunction, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and “restless legs syndrome” have been promoted by companies hoping to sell more of their drugs.

Other minor problems that are a normal part of life, such as symptoms of the menopause, are also becoming increasingly “medicalised”, while risk factors such as high cholesterol levels or osteoporosis are being presented as diseases in their own right, according to the editors.

“Disease-mongering turns healthy people into patients, wastes precious resources and causes iatrogenic (medically induced) harm,” they say. “Like the marketing strategies that drive it, disease-mongering poses a global challenge to those interested in public health, demanding in turn a global response.”

Doctors, patients and support groups need to be more aware that pharmaceutical companies are taking this approach, and more research is needed into the changing ways in which conditions are presented, according to the writers.

Disease-awareness campaigns are often funded by drug companies, and “more often designed to sell drugs than to illuminate or inform or educate about the prevention of illness or the maintenance of health”, they say.

Particular conditions that are highlighted in the journal include sexual function in both men and women. The prevalence of female sexual dysfunction, one paper claims, has been highly exaggerated to provide a new market for drugs, while the makers of anti-impotence medicines, such as Viagra and Cialis, have been involved with their presentation as lifestyle drugs that can boost the sexual prowess of healthy men.

Ordinary shyness is routinely presented as a social anxiety disorder and treated with antidepressants, while newly identified conditions such as “restlessed conditions such as “restless legs syndrome” — a constant urge to move one’s legs — are presented as being much more common than they really are.

Richard Ley, of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, rejected the accusations, pointing out that Britain has firm safeguards against disease-mongering. Many of the authors’ criticisms, he said, were aimed squarely at countries such as the United States, where pharmaceuticals can be openly advertised directly to patients.

“Drug companies are not allowed to communicate directly with patients, and we do not invent diseases,” he said.

“We provide information that there are treatments out there that might help certain conditions, but at the end of the day it is down to health professionals to decide if they are appropriate.

“The best safeguard is that the doctor who knows the product and knows the patient’s history is the one who decides what to prescribe.”

Symptoms -- include hot flushes, night sweats and loss of libido
Criticism -- too often “medicalised” as part of a “disorder” when it is a normal phase of life

Symptoms -- include constipation, cramps and diarrhea
Criticism -- promoted by drug companies as a serious illness needing therapy, when it is usually a mild problem

Symptoms -- impotence in men, lack of libido or difficulty becoming aroused in women
Criticism -- drugs such as Viagra marketed not only for treating genuine erectile dysfunction caused by medical problems but as lifestyle improvers

Symptoms -- thinning of the bones, particularly among postmenopausal women
Criticism -- portrayed as a disease in its own right, when it is really a risk factor for broken bones

Symptoms -- urge to move legs because of unpleasant feelings, often at night
Criticism -- prevalence of a relatively rare condition exaggerated by the media, along with the need for treatment

Poison Ivy -- What to do when exposed

In a message dated 4/28/2006 11:05:12 AM Eastern Standard Time, CV5699 writes:

Also, can you give me any advice on Poison Ivy.I am itching so bad. My right arm got it badly and the soft tissueunderneath is very swollen. I'm at a loss about that. Can you help? Thanks, CV

In simple cases, just apply a layer of the Shaklee New Concept toothpaste to the affected area and let it dry. Leave it on and change it out morning and evening. This will draw the poison ivy out of the skin.

Generally, you don't want to moisturize poison ivy with any of the moisturizing creams or lotions -- this may allow it to spread.

For more difficult cases, I found the plan below that I received from someone several years ago.

Immediately -- upon contact, strip off and wash all clothes and shoes so the plant oil will not get from these articles back onto your hands/skin to casue a rash.Immediately -- thoroughly soak exposed area of skin with a weak solution of Shaklee Basic-G. Then gently wash hands, arms, legs, all point of contact with Shaklee Basic-H or Meadow Blend Bar. Dry by blotting (do not rub) with paper towels and discard them. Pat with a cotton ball saturated with alcohol to dry skin.

Observe closely -- for 48 hours. If you do not wash immediately upon contact, it may take a couple of days for a rash to appear and a couple of weeks for it to run its course. If any rash appears, do not scratch, but apply Shaklee Herbal Cream to stop the itching. Then apply "Healing Paste" to dry and clear it up in 24 hours.

Recipe for "Healing Paste": First, make a saline solution (for healing and drying) by mixing 1 teaspoon salt into 1/2 cup purified water. Stir to dissolve.

Into a small container, put 1 teaspoon saline solution from above. Add and blend --
1 teaspoon Enfuselle C&E Repair P.M. (to heal)
1 teaspoon Enfuselle Infusing Mineral Masque (to draw, heal, and dry)
1 teaspoon New Concept Organic Dentifrice Spearmint (to sooth)

Importance of Vitamin C

Dr. Andrew Saul, Ph.D.

If so, why haven't you heard more about it? Why haven't more doctors used Vitamin C as medicine?

Progress takes time, unfortunately. Fresh fruit was known to cure scurvy by 1753, yet governments ignored the fact for nearly 100 years. Countless thousands died in the meantime. The 19th century doctor who first advocated washing one's hands between patients died ignored and in disgrace with the medical profession. Toxic mercury was used as medicine into the twentieth century. And so it has been.

The first physician to aggressively use Vitamin C to cure diseases was Frederick R. Klenner, M.D. beginning back in the early 1940's. Dr. Klenner consistently cured chicken pox, measles, mumps, tetanus and polio with huge doses of the vitamin. While vaccines are now available for these illnesses, please remember this was not the case in the 1940's.

The following is a list of the conditions that Dr. Klenner successfully treated with aggressive Vitamin C therapy:
Pneumonia Encephalitis Herpes Zoster (shingles) Herpes Simplex Mononucleosis Pancreatitis Hepatitis Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Bladder Infection Alcoholism Arthritis Some Cancers Leukemia Atherosclerosis Ruptured Intervertebral Disc High Cholesterol Corneal Ulcer Diabetes Glaucoma Schizophrenia Burns and secondary infections Heat Stroke Radiation Burns Heavy Metal Poisoning (Mercury, Lead) Venomous Bites (insects, snakes) Multiple Sclerosis Chronic Fatigue Complications of Surgery

This seems like an impossible list of Vitamin C cures. At this point, you can either dismiss the subject or investigate further. Dr. Klenner chose to investigate. The result? He used massive doses of Vitamin C for over forty years of family practice. He wrote dozens of medical papers on the subject. A complete list of them is in the Clinical Guide to the Use of Vitamin C, edited by Lendon H. Smith, M.D., Life Sciences Press, Tacoma, WA (1988).

It is difficult to ignore his success, but it has been done. Dr. Klenner wrote: "Some physicians would stand by and see their patient die rather than use ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) because in their finite minds it exists only as a vitamin."

Vitamin C is remarkably safe even in enormously high doses. Compared to commonly used prescription drugs, side effects are virtually nonexistent. It does not cause kidney stones. In fact, Vitamin C increases urine flow and favorably lowers the pH to help keep stones from forming. William J. McCormick, M.D. used Vitamin C since the late 1940's to prevent and treat kidney stones. Vitamin C does not significantly raise oxalate levels, and uric acid stones have never resulted from its use, either. Said Dr. Klenner: "The ascorbic acid/kidney stone story is a myth."

How much Vitamin C is an effective therapeutic dose? Dr. Klenner gave up to 300,000 milligrams (mg) per day. Generally, he gave 350 to 700 mg per kilogram body weight per day. That is a lot of Vitamin C. But then again, look at that list of successes.

Dr. Klenner emphasized that small amounts do not work. He said, "If you want results, use adequate ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)."

If you want to learn more about the therapeutic uses of vitamin C, the following books are best:
How To Live Longer and Feel Better, by Linus Pauling, Ph.D., (Freeman, 1986) The Healing Factor: Vitamin C Against Disease, by Irwin Stone (Putnam, 1972) The Vitamin C Connection, by Emanuel Cheraskin, M.D. et al (Harper and Row, 1983) Clinical Guide to the Use of Vitamin C, by Lendon H. Smith, M.D. (cited above)

Physicians and other health professionals may wish to read papers by William J. McCormick, M.D., Linus Pauling, Ph.D, Abram Hoffer, M.D., and recent articles by Robert F. Cathcart III, M.D. The Journal of Orthomolecular Medicineis especially recommended.

Thyroid Testimony

06 April 2006

I felt that I had already been so blessed since I started using Shaklee's Essential Foundation. My carpal tunnel has been pain and symptom free since I started on the products in Dec of 2004.

Little did I know how truly blessed I am and that I would be given such a wonderful gift once again. I started on the Nutriferon in October of 2005. I was just basically taking it to rebuild my immune system, not realizing what it was actually doing for me.

I had been taking Synthroid for my thyroid for 20 years. A small tablet once a day that I had resigned myself to the fact that I would be taking it for the rest of my life. In January of this year I started having trouble with my Synthroid dosage and kept having to go into the clinic for blood draws. Each time that I went in, my Synthroid dosage was dropped. I would take the new dose for about 3 weeks and then the trouble would start again. The doctor, nurses and lab techs were baffled. None of them could figure out what was going on.

I stopped taking my Synthroid on Feb 15th because I felt it was making me sick. I started feeling better almost immediately after stopping the meds. I went for another blood draw on Feb 20th, got my results on Feb 24th. My thyroid is at a normal range and I was told that I no longer needed to take my Synthroid. I have been ecstatic ever since.

Who would have ever guessed that I would be prescription free after 20 years. My doctor and the nursing staff want more info on the Nutriferon and the lab tech is one of our pilot program evaluators!!

Thank you Shaklee, thank you so very much!!

Abnormal Pap Smear -- My Response

In a message dated 4/5/2006 7:47:30 PM EST:

Stan – Got a question for you regarding some problems Alan and Tammy Cameron’s daughter, Karen, is having. She’s 20 years old and has had three pap smears come back with problems.

She went yesterday to the doctor to be checked and he said there is something there, so Tammy said he did a couple of biopsies. All she said the doctor communicated was that there are a few spots showing up. As of right now, Karen is not taking any supplements, but Tammy said she agreed today to try some (but she said not a lot). She asked me what the best thing to start her own. I, of course said I would check with you first. Tammy did say Karen is a smoker.

Thanks for your advice.

This is a sensitive question, but I have to ask because it makes all the difference in the world as to what she needs. Is Karen married, or do you know if she is sexually active?

A very large percentage of abnormal pap smear results are a result of human papilloma virus, which is transmitted through sexual contact -- or other sexually transmitted infectious agents.

It is also known that cigarette smoking greatly increases the risk of cervical dysplasia (abnormal cell growth), hence an abnormal pap smear.

And severe vaginal yeast infections may also be a factor.

Once again, the answer lies in feeding and building up the immune system, which should normally be daily ridding the body of abnormal cell growth such as appears in an abnormal pap smear, whatever the cause.

So my recommendation is generally improving the diet with higher intake of fruits and vegetables and doing away with junk food completely. And:
**plenty of Vita-C -- preferably 8-10 per day until the problem clears up
**Vita-E -- preferably 3-4 per day
**CarotoMax -- 2-3 per day
**Optiflora daily -- in fact, it would be a good idea to insert an Optiflora capsule as far up into the vagina as possible each day for direct application of the good bacteria to the area, especially if she has a history of yeast infections. This will directly fight any viral or bacteria agents that may be involved in the situation.

Formula I and NutriFeron would also be beneficial.

Here is one quote I found on the subject:
"Women with cervical dysplasia may have lower blood levels of beta-carotene and vitamin E compared to healthy women. Low levels of selenium and low dietary intake of vitamin C have also been observed in women with cervical dysplasia. Women with a low intake of vitamin A have an increased risk of cervical dysplasia."

I worked with one woman about 5 years ago that had an abnormal pap smear and actually had cervical warts as a result of human papilloma virus, which she had contracted from her ex-husband. He had apparently been involved in sexual activity outside of marriage and eventually left her to marry another woman. In the meantime, he had passed human papilloma virus to her.

The doctor was giving her all this scare talk about potential cervical cancer. She started "the bomb" and followed it pretty faithfully for a 2 or 3 months. But when she went back about the end of that time, the cervical warts were gone and the new pap smear was normal.

Another new and improved calcium supplement? Some of you might be asking why. Let me see if I can shed a little light on this situation. The first clinical study I can find that Shaklee conducted and published in The Journal of the American Medical Association was almost 30 years ago! Can you imagine where the status of our health might be today if Shaklee scientists had not conducted that study showing the relationship between calcium supplementation and bone health? Do you think that study got the attention of the traditional medical community?
The good news is that Shaklee research didn’t stop then. The research continued. Newer and improved formulations were introduced from time to time based on new nutritional findings. Will this be the end-all formula? Probably not. I find it comforting to be affiliated with a company that doesn’t rest on its laurels. I find it comforting to be affiliated with a company that wants to continue to improve its products. I find it comforting to be affiliated with a company that places my health as one of their top priorities. How about you?

New studies point out that more than 44 million Americans are affected by osteoporosis despite the fact that we Americans consume more dairy products and calcium than any other population in the world. It reinforces the supposition that one cannot get what we need from the food we eat. The amazing realization is that calcium does not work alone…just like a house made of bricks without mortar would be unstable.

OsteoMatrix™ is more than just another calcium supplement. It contains a nutritional matrix with a perfect blend of "brick-and-mortar" nutrients to build strong and healthy bones. This matrix is made up of magnesium, vitamin D, boron, vitamin K, manganese, copper and zinc. This formula provides more bone-building nutrients that other leading brands including 100% of the calcium, magnesium and vitamin D required for building bones. We get clinically proven absorption and bioavailability. And, the serving size has been reduced to four tablets. In addition to its bone-building advantage, OsteoMatrix™ also helps retain normal blood pressure and reduces the symptoms of PMS.

Who might benefit from OsteoMatrix™? Anyone concerned with maintaining long-term bone health; people whose diet may be deficient in calcium; those who consume soft drinks; women with PMS; and people concerned about retaining normal blood pressure. Also, recent studies indicate that bone density reaches its maximum by the time people are in their late twenties. Bone density begins to level off and decrease after that time if the diet and/or supplementation are lacking. Therefore it is quite important that women over the age of 30 consider OsteoMatrix™ as a part of their regular nutritional supplementation regimen. The smaller non-chalky tablet is preferred by just about everyone.

Will we get another "new and improved" calcium supplement in the future? I wouldn’t bet against it. Shaklee scientists will continue to do the research and conduct clinical studies that affect your and my health. For me that is a very comforting thought…how ‘bout you?

Anyway, she's having an interesting reaction to it. It's making her almost goofy. So we want to know exactly how this works and why she might be feeling this way.

Is this a reaction to the toxins being thrown into her bloodstream? If so, how do they get there? Are they being released from the liver only to go back into the bloodstream to be filtered out again? As you can tell, I don't understand how this works.

Pam's asking, "Is there any detox going on at all???"

Thanks for any help.

She is NOT reacting to the DTX.

She IS reacting to the toxins.

It is not necessary to understand the intricacies of how it works to get the benefit of it. It is all far more complex -- i.e., fearfully and wonderfully made -- than can be explained in a brief e-mail.

The liver is a very complex machine. Yes, there is a certain recycling going on. Normally, bile is discharged from the liver by way of the gallbladder into the small intestine, where it breaks down fats for absorption through the wall of the small intestine into the blood stream. Most bile is eliminated from the body and is what makes bowel movements brown in color. [This brown color of bile comes from the dead red blood cells that the liver filters from the blood.] A portion of the bile salts are absorbed into the blood stream, where, after circulating through the body, are returned to the liver to be recycled into new bile.

As toxins are pulled from the liver into the small intestine, most are being eliminated in bowel movements. Some may be absorbed through the intestine wall into the blood stream -- especially if the person has "leaky gut syndrome" as a result of insufficient intestinal flora. Toxins that are absorbed into the blood stream will circulate through the body back to the liver to be refiltered -- and the cycle starts over again.

Each time it goes around more is eliminated until the liver and blood are cleansed.

A person can improve the efficiency of the DTX/detoxing process by:

. . . consuming more fiber -- bile binds the toxins to the fiber which then cares it out through elimination, reducing the amount that may pass through the small intestine wall and get absorbed into the blood. I recommend several scoops of Fiber Plan Daily Crunch each day -- it is delicious and an easy way to greatly increase your fiber.

. . . and by building up the intestinal flora with Optiflora to prevent "leaky gut syndrome." Normally, the wall of the intestine should be coated with the good bacteria/flora. This good bacteria serves as a "gatekeeper" regulating what gets access to pass through the intestinal wall into the blood stream. Antibiotics and other drugs kill the good bacteria off, leaving the "gate," the intestinal wall, unguarded so toxins can pass through into the blood and lymph fluids.

Like I said -- fearfully and wonderfully made.

Pam can be assured that continued use of the DTX is drawing down her toxins, though she is feeling the effects of that portion that are getting recycled. But she can speed up and improve her results by adding the Fiber and Optiflora.

Health Professionals Speak Brochure

Many of you are fairly new and have not seen the "Health Professionals Speak" brochure I did three years ago.

I thought some of you may find it helpful.

This is a .PDF file for Acrobat Reader, and it is intended to be printed 2-sided and folded as a brochure.

Internal Medicine

“The reason that I have recommended only Shaklee to my patients
is that I have clinical, peer-reviewed data included in the catalog that
I can refer to. You have to have good clinical studies, good
double-blind peer-reviewed studies in order to evaluate a product.
As a medical professional, that’s the only thing that I’ll listen to.
Except for Shaklee, I’m not aware of anyone who’s done in-depth
studies. It’s the only company I’ve seen do it and that’s why it’s the
only company I can professionally recommend.”
Professor of Nutrition, Biochemistry & Biophysiology
University of North Carolina Medical School

“One of the biggest mistakes people make is taking inexpensive
vitamins. Mail order vitamins offering fantastic “deals” are worth
just about what you pay for them. NEVER buy these vitamins or
supermarket/pharmacy brands without checking them out first.
Cut-rate products often contain additives, food allergens, sugar,
artificial food coloring and flavoring. Many are coated with shellac
or contain potentially hazardous chemicals like chlorine. Shaklee
performs up to 176 separate tests for purity, freshness, potency, and
safety on the raw ingredients for a single product. Products undergo
as many as 262 separate quality assurance tests throughout the
manufacturing process as well. In addition, all product label claims
have documented substantiation.”
Virginia Beach, VA

“As a physician and pediatrician, I demand scientific validation of
the products I use in my practice. Smart supplementation today
means taking the right amounts with the right formulation, and
Shaklee has made it so easy for us to do that now. For over 19 years,
Shaklee has been a blessing for me, my family, and my patients who
have all benefitted from scientifically proven products for quality
health and healthy living. Our food today is so deficient in nutrients
because of what we have done to it. It is no longer the same food
that nature offered to us. For my fellow physicians who are looking
into incorporating nutrition in their practice, I encourage you to
consider using Shaklee's quality health products that you can trust
and recommend with full confidence."
Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons

“Shaklee Products are very well tested both from a standpoint of
efficacy and safety. I consider Shaklee’s study of bone loss and their
[Vita-Lea] product’s relationship to bone loss not only important
from a standpoint of their product, but important from a standpoint
of the scientific community’s understanding of bone loss. . . . I think
it’s very impressive that the Shaklee scientists are willing not
necessarily to go with the flow, but rather to go with the science.”
Council for Responsible Nutrition

“You need to select a manufacturer that you can trust.
Unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous entrepreneurs out there
who will try anything and who are marketing street drug knock-offs
or recreational drugs under the name of dietary supplements. One
of our biggest problems today is that there are some small
manufacturers on the fringes of the industry who make products that
don’t meet necessary standards and gives a black eye to the whole
industry. Quality companies, companies like Shaklee Corporation,
are making a stand for quality products and for truthful information
and we believe that is very important.”
Consumer Health Care Products Association

“Shaklee is a very important force at the forefront in terms of helping
to cultivate the field of self-care.
Botanicals International [one of the world’s leading suppliers of raw
materials to major manufacturers world-wide]

“Shaklee has some rigorous standards that they actually initiated in
the industry. . . . Shaklee is definitely our pickiest and most strict
customer. They are very demanding, and they have specifications
beyond and above the specifications set by our other customers. I
think for a lot of customers, price is an issue when they are choosing
botanicals, but I wish they had the awareness about the quality of the
botanicals and the quality of the brand before they make their
decisions. I tell my friends, that if they want to buy quality, they have
to buy Shaklee.”
Saskatoon, Canada

"Supplements are absolutely crucial due to the quality of our soil and
food today. There are a lot of different supplements available on the
market, but labels do not accurately reflect contents. Over the past
ten years, I have been using Shaklee supplements for personal use,
as well as confidently recommending them to my patients."
Perth, Ontario

"Patients get results with Shaklee! There is a definite difference in
the holding patterns for chiropractic adjustments for patients taking
Shaklee supplements."
Registered Nutritional Consultant
Toronto, Ontario

"I have been in practice for over 26 years and have used many brands
of supplements, including professional brands. About 7 years ago, I
was given information about the Shaklee Corporation. I was
impressed when I read that over 80 research studies and articles
about Shaklee products were published in prestigious nutritional and
medical journals. Wanting the best for my clients, I started
recommending Shaklee supplements. I was amazed at the results.
My clients experienced a level of wellness far exceeding anything I
had experienced in the previous 19 years."
Kingston, Ontario

"The most trusted name in clinical science is Shaklee."

“Why do I take Shaklee vitamins when I can get others as samples for
free? From a pharmacist's view, you have to look at the clinical
research that is done by Shaklee.

“Mrs. Lindley and I are writing a book on prenatal nutrition -- not
quite complete -- and we requested clinical studies from the makers
of prenatal vitamins and no major company, except Shaklee, could
provide us with any studies!

“Also, as you know, the Shaklee vitamins are natural as opposed to
the synthetic prenatal vitamins available in drug stores. The makers
of those prenatal vitamins stress the amount of folic acid in them,
which is 1 mg. Because they have 1 mg of folic acid, they have to be
on prescription because folic acid can mask pernicious anemia. But
if you look at the prenatal vitamins, they have very few of the other
vitamins and most leave out biotin completely.

“It is funny that you ask me this question because a few weeks ago I
had a nurse call in for some prenatal vitamins, and I asked her what
was the best prenatal vitamin. She said, ‘I don’t know.’ So I asked
her how did they determine what brand of vitamin to give to the
patients. She said, ‘Whatever they can tolerate.’

“There are so many reasons why I take Shaklee over the vitamins I
could get from pharmaceutical companies. I don' t have time to
explain all, but the main reason is because the Shaklee vitamins
produce results! “
author of Health Wisdom for Women

. . . states that Shaklee's Vita-Lea is the best pre-natal vitamin she
has found. She never has problems with her patients becoming
anemic like many of her colleagues do. The cost of Vita-Lea (1 with
breakfast and 1 with the evening meal) is 28 cents, a small price to
pay for so much nutritional insurance. “It is so important for adults
and children to take a Vita-Lea (multi) tablet twice a day in order to
fill in the gaps in the diet and to give your body everything it needs
for healing and repair (which takes place while you sleep). People
who think they eat ‘very well’ are surprised to find out that minerals
and trace minerals are very low in supermarket foods, due to early
harvesting, transporting, and storage. Of all the vitamins on the
market, Shaklee supplements are different. Vita-Lea is made
primarily from organically-grown vegetable sources, cold-processed
to preserve enzymes, and contains exactly what the label states. Not
only that, all Shaklee supplements are clinically tested to make sure
that what is on the label is actually absorbed.”

Too Much Fluoride Is Bad

Further reason why all Shaklee people should make the investment in a BestWater Reverse Osmosis System --]

The high levels of naturally-occurring fluoride in some drinking water can cause tooth and bone damage and should be reduced, the National Research Council says.

The study did not analyze the benefits or risks of adding fluoride to drinking water. Instead it looked at the current maximum limit of 4 milligrams per liter. Approximately 200,000 people live in communities where that level occurs naturally in water.

The Council suggested further studies to establish a new maximum level, but noted that the problems associated with exposure to fluoride are very small at 2 milligrams per liter and less. Approximately 1.4 million people have drinking water with natural fluoride levels of 2.0 to 3.9 milligrams per liter, said the Council, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

More than 160 million Americans live in communities with artificially fluoridated water, which contains between 0.7 and 1.2 milligrams of fluoride per liter.

Fluoride is added to water to help strengthen the teeth. However, getting too much of the chemical can cause problems.

The Council reported that drinking water with levels above the maximum can cause tooth discoloration and weaken the enamel, and long-term accumulation in the bones can result in an increase in fractures.

Fluoride's Link to Cancer
In 1975, Dr. Dean Burk, the former chief chemist of the National Cancer Institute, and Dr. John Yiamouyiannis conducted a study comparing cancer death rates in the 10 largest fluoridated cities matched with the 10 largest non-fluoridated cities. These cities were matched for equal cancer death rates before the fluoridation experiment was begun.

They found that once cities began including fluoride in their drinking water, cancer death rates began to climb. After 13 to 17 years of fluoridation of their drinking water, these cities experienced a 10 percent increase in cancer death rates compared with the non-fluoridated cities.

The incidence of cancer would be even higher than the cancer death rates, since many people with cancer will not die of the disease during the years studied.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) repeated the study using a larger number of cities and found similar results.

Several other doctors found even more frightening associations between fluoridation of drinking water and cancer incidences. Dr. Donald Austin of the California Tumor Registry discovered the cancer death rates in California were 40 percent higher in fluoridated communities and Dr. Victor Ceilioni showed the cancer death rates in Canadian cities were 15 percent to 25 percent higher in fluoridated Canadian cites compared with non-fluoridated cities.

Although a heavy proponent of fluoridation, the U.S. Public Health Service discovered similar results as Drs. Austin and Ceilioni after following up its initial fluoridation program.

In the first of the fluoridated cities in the U.S. - Grand Rapids, Michigan - the Public Health Service found a 22 percent increase in cancer death rates compared with the non-fluoridated control city of Muskegon, Michigan.

We can now show a strong connection between fluoridated drinking water and cancer death rates.

Ginseng Helps Cancer Patients

26 March 2006
[Stan's note: The highest possible quality ginseng is available in Shaklee's CorEnergy --]

The traditional Chinese herb ginseng boosts survival and general health for breast cancer patients, according to a study at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Xiao-Ou Shu and her colleagues at Vanderbilt reviewed the cases of nearly 1,500 breast cancer patients from Shanghai, China, all of whom received standard medical therapies including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Many of the woman also used ginseng.

It turned out that the patients who had been regularly using ginseng before their cancer diagnoses had a 30 percent lower cancer mortality rate after four years, compared to those who had never used the herb.

The researchers also found that the women who continued to use ginseng after their cancer diagnoses scored higher than others on a General Quality of Life Inventory. The strongest effect was seen in the psychological and social well-being components of the inventory.

"Ginseng use is believed to maintain natural energy, increase physical and psychomotor performance, improve mood and cognitive function, and thus promote quality-of-life or well-being," said Dr. Shu.

As to the herb's effects on patient survival, the researchers believe ginseng slows the growth of cancer cells, boosts the effects of some cancer drugs. and inhibits the ability of tumors to develop blood supplies.

The study appears in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Speaking of oral health, what would you recommend for advanced gingivitis?

Gingivitis [inflammation of the gums around the teeth], even advanced gingivitis, can be reversed dramatically for many, many people simply by switching to brushing your teeth with Shaklee New Concept Dentifrice instead of store brand toothpastes.

One of the independent clinical studies Shaklee commissioned some years ago was done by Forsyth Dental Institute in Boston. Forsyth is a major dental research center affiliated with Harvard University School of Dental Medicine and with Northeastern University.

They did extensive testing on human subjects and found the the Shaklee New Concept Dentifrice was superior to the leading brands of toothpaste in all three areas that they tested -- plaque removal, stain removal, and improvement of gum conditions.

And New Concept is more economical !!! -- since it, like most Shaklee products, is highly concentrated and you only have to use a little dab on your toothbrush.

3 other key points:
1. The American Dental Association actual stated in writing several years ago that Shaklee New Concept was the only toothpaste manufactured in the United States that does not have sugar or saccharine in it. That may have changed, but certainly it is one of the few.
2. A dentist friend of ours has said that New Concept is the only brand that he is aware of that does not have formaldehyde in it.
3. New Concept does not contain fluoride, which is a deadly poison. Instead, it contains xylitol, which is a natural sweetener that research has shown has a tooth enamel protective effect like fluoride without any of fluoride's toxicity.]

In addition to using Shaklee New Concept as your toothpaste, I would strongly recommend daily chewing some Chewable Vita-C. You don't have to chew mega doses. Just pop one in your mouth and thoroughly chew it up several times a day -- letting the vitamin C wash over your gums. The vitamin C will be very healing to damaged gum tissue. The vitamin C will help kill bacteria that plays a role in causing the inflammation. AND vitamin C is a natural anti-inflammatory.

Consistently using the Essential Foundations (protein and Basics) for overall health will also help bring healing to the gums.

Shaklee vs Mouth Sores Testimony

22 March 2006

Dear Stan & JoAnn,

Just thought we would report another victory for Shaklee.

The Pastor where we are in revival has had mouth sores off and on for a few years. He just so happened to have one while we are here. We told him about the Vita-C, and he decided he would try it.

We had an extra bottle of Vita-C, and I gave it to him to try. He put one on his mouth sore, and let it dissolve on it -- and then took 6 for his head cold. The Vita-C completely took the soreness out of his mouth sore, and he could tell it was going away just from one pill! His head cold was also on the mend by that night.

Thanks so much for a great product!!

Drugging Ourselves to Death

from Bottom Line's Daily Health News -- March 14, 2006

The other day, my friend came home from the doctor with a cholesterol reading of 220 and a prescription for Lipitor. Deborah is 36, exercises like a demon, is in great shape, eats a healthful Mediterranean diet, has no heart disease in her family and doesn't smoke. But her doctor read her the riot act -- she left his office convinced that the only thing standing between her and an imminent heart attack was this little pill.

What's wrong with this picture? Why does it seem that so many people (doctors and patients alike) believe that drugs are the answer to all our health problems? The statistics after all are dismal -- health-care spending has gone up by 73% over the past five years. We're now spending more than twice as much per person as the 21 other industrialized countries, but we are last in healthy life expectancy.

What gives? To find out more, I interviewed Harvard professor of medicine John Abramson, MD, author of Overdosed America: The Broken Promise of American Medicine (Harper Perennial). Dr. Abramson believes that health care in America is going in the wrong direction, and that much of the reason has to do with the drug companies.

"The first thing people can do to improve their health and protect themselves from distorted health care is to understand that information about drugs and health is being brought to them and to the doctors by the drug companies, because of its commercial value," Dr. Abramson told me. "The fundamental purpose of that information is to improve corporate profits, not to improve our health."

Dr. Abramson is hardly saying that all drugs are useless. He simply believes that many are way overprescribed and that the focus on specific measures, such as high cholesterol, deprives doctors of a real opportunity to dialogue with their patients about practices that have been repeatedly shown in research to improve health and reduce risk for heart disease and other killers. In many cases, such practices are far better and cheaper than drugs.

"Look," Dr. Abramson told me, "there's not a single randomized controlled study that shows that statin drugs (i.e., Lipitor and Zocor) decrease the risk for heart disease or improve the health of women that don't already have heart disease. But consider this -- there are five behaviors that produce an astonishing 83% reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease in women, yet only 3% of American women do these five basic things. I think that concentrating on cholesterol reduction is very misplaced, and is largely fueled by drug company marketing."

The five behaviors that reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease by 83% are...
1. Eat a healthy Mediterranean diet (olive oil, fish, fruits, vegetables, whole grains). For more on the Mediterranean diet, see Daily Health News, January 13, 2005.
2. Exercise regularly.
3. Don't smoke.
4. Consume alcohol only in moderation.
5. Maintain a healthy body weight.

Dr. Abramson continued, "The impression we get from the media is that we need to depend on expensive new technologies to be healthy when in fact most of our health is determined by how we live our lives. And that is a tremendously liberating concept. There are things we can control right now that will dwarf the health benefits of most of the drugs we're being sold left and right."
To beat the drums on cholesterol and heart disease a little longer... a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association on a study that followed 7,300 women for 31 years showed that the overall contribution of high cholesterol to mortality is zero. "It had zero effect on mortality and it did not make a significant contribution to heart disease," Dr. Abramson told me.

Then why are statin drugs pushed so relentlessly? "Let's take a study like WOSCOP (a famous study used to support the use of statin drugs). They used high-risk men -- almost half of these men smoked and 8% already had vascular disease. Using a statin drug, they got a 31% reduction in heart disease, which translates to one death prevented for every 100 men treated over five-and-a-half years. Fair enough. But look at what happened in the LYON Diet Heart Study, which studied people who had already had a heart attack. Instead of giving any drugs, they just gave diet advice: One half was counseled to eat a Mediterranean diet, the other half to eat a prudent post-heart attack diet -- one that is low in fat and cholesterol. The Mediterranean diet was three times more effective than the prudent diet at reducing heart disease, and two times as effective in reducing death. And that happened even though cholesterol levels stayed the same!" Dietary modification worked far better than the statins.

Dr. Abramson also said that the women in the Nurses Health Study showed the very same 31% reduction in heart disease just by eating fish once a week that the high-risk men in the WOSCOP study got by going on drugs.

The point isn't that drugs are "bad." The point is that focusing exclusively on cholesterol numbers squanders an important opportunity for doctors to help their patients by giving them lifestyle advice that makes far more of a difference to their health with no side effects than bringing down cholesterol with medications.

Dr. Abramson and I talked a lot about the use of cholesterol-lowering medication since it is such a prominent example of excessive drug use. However, according to Dr. Abramson, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, lung disease and breast cancer all respond powerfully to lifestyle interventions, yet the cost and frequency of drug usage to treat these issues is also skyrocketing."We know how to prevent about 70% of illness," Dr. Abramson concluded. "We ought to be focusing on the things we can do right now in our lives to accomplish that rather than focusing on what expensive drug we've been told we need to take. Those drugs don't work nearly as well as the lifestyle choices."

Plus, the lifestyle choices are free and carry no side effects. Oh, there's one possible side effect: Reduced profits at the drug companies. Oh well.
